Aeroplan’s Up to 85% Bonus Points Deal is Back – But Should You Buy?

Aeroplan just dropped another juicy buy points promotion, and my inbox is already blowing up with questions about whether this deal is worth it.

Here’s the scoop: you can get up to 85% bonus points when purchasing Aeroplan points through September 10, 2025 – but like most of these deals, the devil is in the details.

Let’s dive into this limited-time offer!

Note: I snagged only an 80% bonus offer on my account, while some of you might be seeing the full 85% or something different entirely. That’s the thing about Aeroplan – they love their targeted offers, which means your mileage may literally vary.

The Deal Breakdown

Here’s how the bonus structure works with this promotion:

  • Under 15,000 points: No bonus.
  • 15,000+ points: Up to 85% bonus (depending on your targeted offer).

At the 85% bonus level, you’re looking at approximately 2.03 cents CAD per point when buying 15,000+ points. While this is slightly below typical Aeroplan valuations of around 2.1 cents each, it becomes profitable when you can squeeze higher value from premium cabin redemptions

When Does Buying Points Make Sense?

Look, I’m not usually the guy telling you to buy points outright. Most of the time, you’re better off earning them through credit card spending, flying, or strategic transfers. With this deal at 2.03 cents CAD per point, you need to be even more strategic:

The “Almost There” Scenario

You’re 15,000 points short of that business class flight to Europe you’ve been eyeing. If that redemption delivers 2.2+ cents per point in value (which premium international flights often do), buying those missing points at 2.03 cents each makes sense instead of paying cash.

The Sweet Spot Redemption

You’ve found a high-value redemption – think 2.5-3+ cents per point – and buying points at 2.03 cents each creates a meaningful profit margin. This works best for business/first class international flights where Aeroplan really shines.

Planning Ahead

At break-even pricing, this deal is best for filling gaps in your points balance for specific high-value redemptions, not for stockpiling points speculatively.

The Math Check

Let me break down a real example. Say you want to book a business class flight from Toronto to Tokyo that costs 75,000 Aeroplan points. If you bought all those points at the 85% bonus level:

  • Points needed: 75,000
  • Points to purchase: ~40,541 (to get 75,000 after 85% bonus)
  • Cost: ~$1,523 CAD
  • Effective cost per point: ~2.03 cents CAD

Compare that to the cash price of the same business class ticket (often $4,000-6,000+), and you’re getting roughly 2.6-3.9 cents of value per point – a solid profit margin that makes the purchase worthwhile.

The Catch (Because There’s Always a Catch)

Annual limits apply: You can only buy 1,000,000 Aeroplan points per calendar year, with a maximum of 500,000 per transaction.

It’s essentially break-even: At 2.03 cents CAD per point, you need to be confident you can extract 2.1+ cents of value from your redemptions. This isn’t a “cheap points” deal – it’s more like pre-paying for flights at face value.

You’re still buying points: This isn’t free travel – you’re essentially paying market rate for future flights. Make sure you’ve got concrete high-value redemption plans.

My Recommendation

This deal runs until September 10, 2025, so you’ve got some time to think it through. If you’re already planning major Aeroplan redemptions and the math works out in your favor, this could be a solid move.

But here’s my general philosophy: only buy points when you have a specific redemption in mind that delivers clear value over paying cash. Don’t just buy them because there’s a promotion and hope you’ll figure out how to use them later.

As always, I’ll keep you posted on any other killer deals that pop up. Until then, safe travels!
