A Second Airport for Montréal? Here’s Why MET Could Change the Game

Some genuinely exciting aviation news is unfolding in Montréal, and this one has the potential to reshape how people in the region fly across Canada.

Most people are familiar with Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, the city’s main gateway to the world. But there is another airport that has quietly been building toward something much bigger.

Meet Montréal Metropolitan Airport, also known as MET.

Located just 15 kilometres from downtown in Longueuil, this airport has traditionally handled regional flights, pilot training, and general aviation.

Now, it is stepping into an entirely new role.

For years, Montréal has effectively operated with a single major commercial airport. That works, but it also creates limitations. Capacity gets tight, competition can be constrained, and travellers often have fewer choices when it comes to routes and pricing.

MET is aiming to change that.

With the development of a brand new passenger terminal, the airport is preparing to reintroduce regular commercial service at scale. The goal is simple but impactful: offer a modern, efficient alternative for domestic travel across Canada, with the potential to expand even further over time.

Porter Airlines is leading the charge

A big reason this project is getting so much attention is the involvement of Porter Airlines.

Porter has been in expansion mode over the past few years, especially with the addition of its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, allowing it to operate longer routes across North America. Partnering with MET gives Porter something it does not currently have in Montréal: a more controlled, boutique-style hub that aligns with its brand.

From day one, Porter and Pascan Aviation are expected to offer access to more than 25 destinations across Canada. That is a strong starting point, especially for an airport that, until recently, was not part of most travellers’ consideration set.

What this means for travellers

This is where things get interesting from a Canadian traveller’s perspective.

More competition, better pricing
A second airport creates competitive pressure. That often translates into more competitive fares, especially on domestic routes where pricing can fluctuate a lot.

A potentially smoother airport experience
MET is positioning itself as a premium, passenger-focused airport. Smaller terminals can mean shorter security lines, faster boarding, and an overall less stressful experience compared to larger hubs.

Convenience for Montréal-based travellers
If you live on the South Shore or even in parts of downtown Montréal, getting to MET could be quicker and easier than heading to Trudeau, depending on traffic and transit options.

New route opportunities
With Porter’s network strategy, expect strong domestic connectivity first. Think key business and leisure routes across Canada, maybe with the possibility of U.S. expansion down the line.

What’s happening next

On March 24, 2026, MET is hosting a media event to showcase the new terminal and share more details about Porter’s service plans. This will be the first real look at how the airport experience will come together and what routes we can expect in the near future.

Key figures from both the airport and Porter will be there, which signals just how important this launch is.

Final thoughts

This is one of those developments that might seem niche at first, but could have a real impact on how people in Montréal and across Canada travel.

A second airport means more choice. More choice usually means better value. And if MET delivers on its promise of a smoother, more enjoyable airport experience, it could quickly become a favourite for domestic trips.

I will be keeping a close eye on route announcements and pricing once things go live. This has the potential to open up some very interesting deals out of Montréal!
